The currency of
Mauritius Island is the rupee and it has for code MUR. The
abbreviation for rupee is RS or Rp. In the past Mauritius
was using as currency Indian rupee, Mauritian dollar and
sterling.

The
Mauritian rupee has been introduced in 1877. Seychelles
Island has been using Mauritian rupee until 1914, year
during which they replaced it by the Seychelles rupee.
The
banknotes of Mauritius are issued by the Bank of Mauritius.
In 1967 were issued the first Mauritian banknotes with four
notes: Rs50, Rs25, Rs10 and Rs5. Between 1967 and 1985 the
Bank of Mauritius made four issues.
There was a 5th
issue in 1985 with more banknotes which were as followed:
Rs1000, Rs500, Rs200, Rs100, Rs50, Rs20, Rs10 and Rs5.
These bank notes were kept until 1998, year in which a sixth
issue was made and in 1999 the seventh and last issue was
made.

Nowadays the bank notes of Mauritius are
as followed: Rs2000, Rs1000, Rs500, Rs200, Rs100, Rs50 and
Rs25.

The two thousand rupee banknote has as
portrait Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam and a bull and sugarcane
cart as vignette.

On the one thousand rupee banknote you
can see as portrait Sir Gaetan Duval and as vignette the
State House.
