Mauritius has been using different
currencies since the arrival of the European settlers. The
banknotes and coins are issued by the Bank of Mauritius.
The coins of Mauritius are as
follows: Rs10, Rs5, Rs1, 50 cents, 20 cents and 5 cents.On
all coins is the portrait of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam. In
the past it was the portrait of the Queen Elizabeth as
Mauritius was a British colony. Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam
has been the Prime Minister of Mauritius from 1961 till
1982. In Mauritius Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam was known and
is still known as the Father of the Nation. He is the one
who brought Mauritius Island to independence in 1968. From
1983 till 1985 Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam was the Governor
General of Mauritius. He died in December 1985. It was a
great loss for Mauritius.

Coins
The ten rupees
coin has a heptagon form as you can observe on the picture
with as portrait Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam. The Rs10 coin
has been introduced in 1997. On the obverse side a labourer
cutting sugar cane in a field. |

Coins
This is a five rupees coin from 1992. On
the reverse side is the portrait of the Honourable Sir
Seewoosagur Ramgoolam and the sea and palm tress on the
obverse side.

The portrait of the Father of the Nation,
Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam is also seen on the reverse side
of the Rs1 coin. It is a one rupee coin from 1997 with part
of the coat of arm on the observe side.

Cents Coins
This is a half rupees coin or 50 cents
from 2005. As portrait is Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam and on
the obverse side a deer.

The twenty cents coin is from 1996 with
20 in numbers written on the obverse side and on the reverse
side Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam.
