Trimurti is a Sanskrit word;
Sanskrit is one of the oldest languages in India. Trimurti means
three forms. In Hinduism the trimurti are the three functions
known as destruction, creation and maintenance. Shiva is the
destroyer; Vishnu is the maintainer and Brahma the creator. The
three deities have been in Hinduism the Great Trinity or the
Hindu Triad. On an image or a painting, it is respectively seen
as the creator, the preserver and the destroyer. Other
representations of the trinity show three heads on a neck or
three faces on a head and each of the faces looking in a
different direction. There is in the Christian belief also a
similar trinity which is God as Father, the son and the Holy
Ghost. But the meaning in Hinduism and Christianity is
different. Hindu also considers animals as holy, cow, monkeys or
elephant. |
