The docks of Port Louis are found
near the harbour where all ships arrive and debarks their goods.
The harbour of Mauritius was in the past located at Grand Port,
but it was found that because of the South East Trade Wind the
sailors had difficulties to sail out of the harbour. It was the
French Governor Maupin who decided in 1730 to changed the
located of the port and shifted it at Port Louis which became
since then the main harbour and the capital city of Mauritius
Island. It has been choose because the mountain range known as
Moka Range acted as a wind break for the city. The main
improvements of Port Louis were mainly made by Mahe de
Labourdonnais as the construction of the Port Louis theatre,
government house, barracks and much more. |
