The pteropus niger is also known
as the Mauritian flying fox, it is a bat endemic to Mauritius.
You can see a picture above of the fruit bat hanging in its cage
in the Casela Bird Park. The wingspan of the Mauritian fruit bat
can reach eighty centimetres and is known as the largest mammal
endemic to Mauritius Island. The fruit bat usually feeds itself
on seeds nectar and fruit. It can found in the national park of
Black River Gorges, in Bel Ombre and Combo too. The fruit bat
was also in the past found on Reunion Islands but extinct
between 1772 and 1801. |
