The Poivre Avenue is not one of
the streets of the town or cities of Mauritius Island. Poivre
Avenue is one of the avenues in the Pamplemousses Botanical
Gradens, each avenues of the garden has a name, the names are
mostly the different names of the ancient governors of the
Island or explorers who visited the island, Pierre Poivre to
whom was dedicated this avenue was a famous French botanist and
explorer who lived in the house which was constructed by Mahe de
Labourdonnais who himself lived in this magnificent place
previously. As Pierre Poivre was a botanist he had seeds from
different part of the world which he planted in the garden.
Pierre Poivre was the administrator of Ile de France, the
ancient name of Mauritius during the French colonisation. Pierre
Poivre is the who made the Pamplemousses Gardens what it is now
and which still flourishing, the garden is now a huge garden of
twenty five hectare who a large number of palm trees and other
trees. Along the Poivre Avenue are huge royal palm trees as if
guiding the visitors to the garden. |
