Place des Armes is one of the
main streets of the capital city of Mauritius Island. It is very
easy to recognize this street; all along there are palms trees
on both sides. All day long there is a lot of traffic on this
street. Port Louis is the largest of Mauritius and the main
harbour is also located there. This also the place where are
found most of the main offices, the government house, embassies.
Port Louis is also one of the nine districts of Mauritius
Island. There is a population of over one hundred forty thousand
in Port Louis. The city was founded by the French around the
year 1735, and was named in honour of King Louis XV. The first
governor of Mauritius was Mahe de Labourdonnais. The streets in
the city are quite narrow and a lot of them are one way streets. |
