On the Maha Shivaratri day, special
prayers and offers are offered to the Lord Shiva. This
Hindu festival is held for one day and one night.
According to the legend, during the mythical churning of
the ocean called “samudra manthan”, there is a pot of
poison that came out from the ocean. At this all the
demons and gods were very afraid that it would destroy
the world, so they went to Shiva and ask for help, to
protect the world. Shiva decided to drink the poison but
instead to swallow it he kept it in his throat and it
turned blue, since that event he was known as “Nikantha”
the blue-throated. Since then Shivaratri is celebrated
in honour of Shiva who has saved the world. |
