The Mauritian tea is as a
national treasure for the island, it also forms part of the
landmarks of the country and mainly the Bois Cheri label. Bois
Cheri is the tea estate and tea factory. When driving along La
Flora and Bois Cheri you will see kilometres of tea plantations.
The tea leaves are collected by the tea pickers, who are mainly
women with a big bucket on their back and start to collect tea
leaves as early as four in the morning and latest until midday.
The tea pickers don’t earn a lot of money doing this work.
Usually they earn around Rs3 for a kg of leaves. On a good day a
worker can collect may be between seventy to one hundred kg of
leaves. This is a good day which is of course not everyday. The
three main tea manufacturers of Mauritius are Bois Cheri with
forty two kinds of tea, Chartreuse with a kind of tea and Corson
has fifteen flavoured teas and seven blends. |
