Port Louis is in fact the municipality council of Mauritius.
The municipality is located in the capital city Port Louis at
Jules Koening Street. The Lord Mayor for the year 2006/2007 is
Hon. Ahmed Reza Goolam Mamode Issack. The municipality of Port
Louis was established in 1850. The first Mayor of the
municipality in 1850 was Louis Lechelle. Every year the Lord
Mayor is elected by the city council. The council of
municipality consist of thirty members. Port Louis is a district
and the capital city of Mauritius Island. The founder of Port
Louis is known as Mahé de Labourdonnais who was also the first
governor of Mauritius and the island was at this period under
the rule of the French colony. Port Louis was founded around the
year 1735. |
