Smaller and bigger lotus ponds
are seen a bit everywhere in the Pamplemousses botanical garden.
The garden was in the past the property of Mahé de Labourdonnais,
who was one of the French governor of Mauritius Island during
the French colonisation. When the French were controlling the
island it was known as Ile de France, which means French Island.
When Mahé de Labourdonnais bought the and at Mon Plaisir, he
constructed on it his house which is still there, and created a
garden with vegetables. Pierre Poivre a botanist and also an
explorer turned the garden in a magnificent botanical garden
with all sort of trees, flowers and plants. When Pierre Poivre
visited the island he had loads of seeds and schrubs which he
planted on the island. |
