Along Grand Bay beach you will
see filaos trees as almost along all the beaches of the island.
The filaos trees is a name that was given to the casuarinas
trees by the Mauritian. The casuarinas are endemic to
Australasia islands western Pacific Ocean and south-eastern
Asia. The filaos as called in Mauritius is a genus of seventeen
species. The casuarinas also get fruits which are oval, woody
looking like a conifer cone with lots of carpels each of them
containing single seeds. In Mauritius the Mauritian often sits
under the casuarinas trees and should be careful because the
fruits may fall down on you and you feel it as it is hard and
woody. |
