The Hindus were brought in Mauritius since slavery period; they came on the island to work in the sugar cane fields until slavery was abolished. The Chinese community came to the island for commercial purposes. The Chinese left China to make business in Mauritius Island. A lot of the Chinese community were married in china and just never went back and got married in Mauritius and stayed on the island. The Hindus working in the sugar cane fields also stayed on the island after slavery was abolished and a large number of those who were working in the fields received a piece of land.
