The Beau Plan Chimney-stack is one of
the finest on Mauritius Island which numbered as many as
over 300 of them during the nineteenth century. A
historical chimney which is often overgrown by
vegetation.The chimney was built in 1895 by the
architect A.Felix, who also built the similar chimney at
Union Delcourt which was only used in 1900. Beau Plan
chimney had to rise to sufficient height to attain
optimum efficiency. It has a height of 33m above ground
which provided the most efficient draught.The histocal
and social life of the island developed in shadow of the
chimney, it ensured a dozens of small craftsmen gathered
around it. The chimney was to the estate what a church
steeple is to a village. |
